Lebanon Area Homeschoolers Drama Department

Audition Protocol/Procedure

Casting is a difficult process both for those auditioning and for the Director. Talent is not the only consideration. Therefore, a student should realize if he or she isn't cast for a particular part, it is because others seemed more suitable for various reasons at that time, not be cause he or she does not have talent or is of less worth. During the audition, students will be asked to read a selected portion from the script. Students auditioning for a particular part will audition from the same pre-selected scenes for that part, unless additional scenes are required for a final selection.

The job of the Director is to understand the script and the student, and to assign parts in a way that will enhance the entire production. The Director will attempt to take into consideration the students’ desire for a specific part, but many times a deserving, talented student will be assigned a part that is not their first choice. If students are equally qualified, preference may be given to an upperclassman.

The Director will assign parts based on:

The Director will attempt to consider a wide range of factors including, but not limited to:

An audition consultant will attend auditions for all major productions. The Drama Committee will devise a rating system for use with the audition consultant, based on the protocol listed above. The Audition Consultant will be selected by the Drama Committee, but should be a person with drama experience who has knowledge of or interest in the Drama Department or Homeschooling. There should be a minimum of three persons attending auditions, including the Director, Producer, and Audition Consultant. The Director will have the final say on casting.
