Lebanon Area Homeschoolers Drama Department
Audition Protocol/Procedure
Casting is a difficult process both for those auditioning and for the Director. Talent is not the only consideration. Therefore, a student should realize if he or she isn't cast for a particular part, it is because others seemed more suitable for various reasons at that time, not be cause he or she does not have talent or is of less worth. During the audition, students will be asked to read a selected portion from the script. Students auditioning for a particular part will audition from the same pre-selected scenes for that part, unless additional scenes are required for a final selection.
The job of the Director is to understand the script and the student, and to assign parts in a way that will enhance the entire production. The Director will attempt to take into consideration the students’ desire for a specific part, but many times a deserving, talented student will be assigned a part that is not their first choice. If students are equally qualified, preference may be given to an upperclassman.
The Director will assign parts based on:
Needs of the production; good of the entire production.
Acting Experience - experience level of the student based on past performances both in dramatic skills and personal conduct, as well as dependability, creativity, cooperation, and ability to follow directions.
Communication Skills – vocalization and articulation. The actor must articulate well, make the material audible and understandable, and use healthy vocal technique as required by the script.
Stage Presence – physical and psychological suitability; emotional maturity.
The Director will attempt to consider a wide range of factors including, but not limited to:
Capability of the student to expand and grow with the assignment.
Consideration of roles the student has had in the past and the potential roles the student will have in the future in other productions in order to allow and encourage opportunity for all students.
The manner the characters interact in the roles of the particular script.
Availability of student for rehearsals and performances
Commitment shown by the student and parent in past productions.
Conduct in past productions and rehearsals.
An audition consultant will attend auditions for all major productions. The Drama Committee will devise a rating system for use with the audition consultant, based on the protocol listed above. The Audition Consultant will be selected by the Drama Committee, but should be a person with drama experience who has knowledge of or interest in the Drama Department or Homeschooling. There should be a minimum of three persons attending auditions, including the Director, Producer, and Audition Consultant. The Director will have the final say on casting.
